Happy 1st Birthday, Marisol Marketing!
Earlier this month, I looked at the calendar while reviewing emails. I gasped when I realized it was coming up on a year since I had decided to make another major life change. I would love to say I was jumping excitedly into entrepreneurship, but any outward confidence was just barely louder than my anxieties.
I have a sign that has been decorating my home for years that says “Do it afraid”—this is much more in line with the mindset I was hanging onto in that season.
In August 2023, I gathered all the belief I could borrow from my closest friends and decided to step back into self-employment. I knew I was not starting from scratch, but rather from experience.
I had zero idea what a hard and fulfilling year it would be, but it’s time to claim August as Marisol Marketing’s Birthday Month!
12 months since those first steps, Marisol Marketing is serving dozens of clients, our team continues to grow, and we are working hard to expand our services.

But what does “Marisol Marketing” mean?
A few months ago, I shared my business card with a new connection and she looked at “Marisol Marketing” and “Jessica Henrichs” and said, “Are you hiding behind your business name?”
Fair question, but no.
A year ago, here’s what I knew was true:
I was leaving my job.
I was going to stay in the marketing/sales, and design space.
I did not intend to stay a solopreneur.
“Jessica Henrichs Marketing” didn’t seem like the right fit.
Early on a Sunday morning, I was sitting on the dock with a cup of coffee and my laptop. The world was mostly quiet and a couple came by on kayaks.
“You’re not working, are you?!”
“No, mostly just thinking,” I replied with a smile.
I was brainstorming business names, and then immediately checking to see what domain names were available.
Marisol + mar y sol
I had recently watched A Man Called Otto. If you have read the book or watched the movie, you may recall the female lead’s name is, Marisol.
She’s persistent, caring, tenacious. She’s one of my favorite characters I’ve ever met in a movie.
Marisol sounds like “mar y sol” Spanish for “sea and sun”. As I was sitting in the morning sun beside the water—my happiest place—“Marisol Marketing” felt like the perfect fit.
There’s a line in the movie where Otto is trying to teach Marisol how to drive a stick shift. She’s flustered and frustrated and Otto turns to Marisol, lists all the things he knows to be true about her smarts and grit, and finishes with, “The world is full of complete idiots who have managed to figure it out and you are not a complete idiot.”
Otto’s voice has stayed in my ear this last year. On the days when I’m feeling stuck, I remember, “You are not an idiot.”
If you’re a business owner or if find yourself in a conversation with someone who may need help with web design, Google Ads, needs a new logo developed, or needs someone who will be fair and reasonable with SEO services—would you think of us?
We would absolutely love to connect and see how we can help!
